The first step in the design process is to determine the size of the alternative energy plant and the energy storage requirement. This is done by compiling an energy load profile for the site from the collected meter data.

For example a solar PV system only generates energy during the day so if the site requires energy during night time a form of energy storage should be incorporated into the design. This would also influence the size of the PV plant as it should generate enough energy during the day to be stored for night time consumption.

Different sites would have different load profiles depending on the climate where they are located and the actual operations of the site. In general load profiles can be grouped into four generic types which give an indication of their typical energy consumption pattern. These four types are:
